Description

Professional 2K Epoxy Primer for Yacht & Marine Use

The Etalon 5400EP 3:1 2K Epoxy Primer is designed to create a strong, durable and anti-corrosive foundation before painting.

Its epoxy technology provides excellent adhesion and protection on many of the materials commonly found during yacht construction, maintenance and refit work.

It is particularly suitable for:

  • Yacht refinishing
  • Boat repairs
  • Aluminium components
  • Steel structures
  • Fiberglass / GRP
  • Metal fittings and structures
  • Hull preparation
  • Superstructure repairs
  • Professional marine maintenance

The grey colour also provides a practical, neutral base for subsequent coating systems.

Anti-Corrosive Protection

Metal surfaces onboard a yacht are continuously exposed to humidity, salt-laden air and demanding environmental conditions.

The Etalon 5400EP creates an anti-corrosive epoxy barrier over correctly prepared surfaces, helping isolate the substrate and providing a durable foundation for the following coating layers.

This is especially important for:

  • Steel
  • Ferrous metals
  • Aluminium
  • Metal repair areas
  • Marine structures

Correct surface preparation remains essential for maximum adhesion and corrosion protection.

Chromate-Free Formula

Etalon describes the 5400EP as a chromate-free epoxy primer.

It provides the corrosion-protection and adhesion benefits required for professional refinishing without relying on chromate pigments.

This makes it a versatile modern primer system for automotive, industrial and marine refinishing applications.

Excellent Adhesion to Multiple Substrates

The complete Etalon 5400EP system is suitable for properly prepared:

Metal & Steel

Provides a strong base on steel and ferrous metal after rust, oxidation and contamination have been removed.

Aluminium

Suitable for aluminium after the surface has been properly cleaned, scuffed and degreased.

This is especially useful for yacht applications involving aluminium structures, panels, brackets and components.

Fiberglass / GRP

Suitable for properly prepared fiberglass surfaces, making the product highly relevant for yacht and boat repair projects.

Existing Coatings

Can be applied over compatible, sound existing coatings after correct sanding, cleaning and preparation.

Body Fillers

Suitable over correctly cured and prepared compatible body fillers as part of a professional refinishing system.

Excellent Choice for Yacht Refits

A yacht refit may involve several different substrates within the same project.

One repair area may include steel, another aluminium and another GRP.

The broad compatibility of Etalon 5400EP makes it particularly practical for professional refit yards and maintenance teams that require one versatile epoxy primer system for multiple types of correctly prepared surfaces.

Suitable for Surfaces Exposed to Immersion

An important feature of the Etalon 5400EP is that the manufacturer specifies it for application on surfaces that will be submerged in water.

This makes it particularly relevant to marine applications where the coating system may be exposed to continuous water contact.

For permanently immersed yacht surfaces, the 5400EP should always be incorporated into the complete coating system specified for the particular substrate, environment and final finish.

Can Be Used as Undercoat or Final Protective Coating

Etalon specifies the 5400EP as suitable for use both:

  • As an undercoat
  • As a final coating in appropriate applications

For yacht refinishing, its most common role will generally be as a protective epoxy primer underneath subsequent compatible coatings.

Always follow the requirements of the complete paint system when overcoating.

3:1 Two-Component System

The Etalon 5400EP is a 2K epoxy primer, meaning it requires the corresponding hardener before application.

Correct Mixing Ratio by Volume

3 parts Etalon 5400EP Primer : 1 part Etalon 5400EH Hardener

The 750ml primer pack is designed to combine with:

250ml Etalon 5400EH Epoxy Hardener

This creates approximately:

1 litre of Primer + Hardener mixture before any required thinner is added.

Mixing Ratio by Weight

5 parts Primer : 1 part Hardener

Accurate mixing is important for correct curing, adhesion and coating performance.

Important – Hardener Required

The 750ml Etalon 5400EP is Component A only.

To use the product correctly, it must be combined with the compatible:

Etalon 5400EH Epoxy Hardener 250ml – ET5400EH-B025

The hardener should therefore be ordered separately unless the product is specifically being sold as a complete set.

Do not substitute an unrelated hardener.

Long Pot Life

Once correctly mixed with the hardener, the 5400EP system has a pot life of approximately:

7–9 hours

This provides a practical working window for professional refinishing applications.

Only prepare the quantity required for the planned job and do not use mixed material after its specified pot life.

Multiple Application Methods

Etalon 5400EP offers excellent flexibility in application.

The mixed product can be applied using:

  • HVLP spray gun
  • Conventional spray equipment
  • Airless spray equipment
  • Electrostatic spray gun
  • Roller

This makes it suitable for both smaller repair areas and larger yacht or industrial surfaces.

Application by HVLP

For HVLP application, Etalon specifies approximately:

Nozzle: 1.5–1.8mm
Number of coats: 2–4 coats

Application by Airless Equipment

For airless application:

Nozzle: approximately 0.28–0.33
Number of coats: 1–2 coats

The appropriate setup should always be selected according to the equipment, surface and required finish.

Controlled Film Build

Recommended coating thickness is approximately:

30–40μm per coat

Building the coating in controlled layers helps achieve even coverage while avoiding unnecessary excessive film thickness.

Fast Flash-Off & Drying

Etalon specifies approximately:

Flash-off: 10 minutes

Under the specified conditions, drying is approximately:

45–55 minutes at 20°C

Actual drying time can vary depending on:

  • Temperature
  • Ventilation
  • Humidity
  • Film thickness
  • Number of coats
  • Application method

Always confirm the coating is adequately cured before sanding or overcoating.

Easy Sanding

When sanding is required, Etalon recommends:

Dry sanding: P320–P500
Wet sanding: P800–P1200

This allows the surface to be prepared to the required standard before applying subsequent coatings.
