Wichard Self-Locking Large SS Opening Shackle

Price range: €23.63 through €38.01

The Wichard Self-Locking Large Opening Shackle is designed for marine applications where a larger opening than a conventional shackle is required. Made from forged 316L stainless steel, it combines excellent corrosion resistance with high mechanical strength. Wichard’s self-locking pin engages with an indentation in the shackle body to prevent accidental loosening caused by vibration. Available in 8mm (#1264) and 10mm (#1265), with nautical Working Loads of 810kg and 1,280kg respectively and Breaking Loads up to 4,000kg.

Description

A larger opening, secure self-locking pin and forged 316L stainless steel – designed for demanding marine connections where a standard shackle does not provide enough space.

The Wichard Self-Locking Large Opening Shackle combines the strength and reliability expected from Wichard marine hardware with one important advantage: extra space inside the shackle.

Wichard specifically designs this model for applications where a large-opening shackle is required. This makes it an excellent solution when a conventional D shackle is simply too compact for the intended attachment point.

For Cavo Yachting, the product is available in two sizes:

8mm – Wichard #1264
10mm – Wichard #1265

Large Opening – More Space for the Connection

The key advantage of this Wichard shackle is its large-opening geometry.

The additional internal space makes installation easier when the attachment point or connected hardware requires greater clearance.

For example, the 10mm #1265 has an A dimension of 72mm and B dimension of 40mm, while the 8mm #1264 measures 57mm and 32mm respectively.

This makes the Large Opening Shackle a practical choice when you need:

  • More internal clearance than a standard shackle
  • A larger attachment opening
  • Secure connection of compatible marine hardware
  • High strength without giving up connection space

Wichard Self-Locking System

A larger opening is only part of the design. Both the 8mm and 10mm versions are self-locking.

When correctly tightened, the pin engages with one of the indentations in the shackle body. Wichard designed this system to prevent accidental pin release caused by vibration.

The principle is simple:

Tighten → Pin engages with the indentation → Reduced risk of accidental loosening

This is particularly useful aboard a sailing yacht, where rigging and deck hardware are constantly exposed to movement and vibration.

Forged 316L Stainless Steel

Both versions are manufactured from:

Forged Grade 316L Stainless Steel

316L stainless steel provides the corrosion resistance expected from high-quality marine hardware, while the forged construction contributes to the shackle’s mechanical performance.

Wichard highlights both outstanding Working and Breaking Loads and CE marking for this range.

Wichard distinguishes between Working Load (WL) for nautical applications and Working Load Limit (WLL) for industrial applications.

Wichard #1264 – 8mm

The 8mm #1264 is the lighter and more compact version.

Nautical Working Load: 810kg

Breaking Load: 2,700kg

Industrial WLL: 540kg

Weight: only 67g

Despite weighing just 67 grams, the #1264 offers a substantial 2,700kg Breaking Load.

Its large-opening design gives it more connection space while maintaining compact overall dimensions, making it a practical choice for sailing applications where both low weight and increased clearance are important.

Wichard #1265 – 10mm

For higher-load applications, choose the 10mm #1265.

Nautical Working Load: 1,280kg

Breaking Load: 4,000kg

Industrial WLL: 800kg

Weight: 127g

The #1265 combines a generous opening with a 1,280kg nautical Working Load and 4,000kg Breaking Load, while weighing only 127g.

It is the stronger of the two Cavo Yachting variations and is ideal when both greater clearance and increased load capacity are required.

Working Load vs Breaking Load

When selecting a marine shackle, it is important to understand the difference between its load ratings.

Working Load (WL) is specified by Wichard for nautical applications.

Working Load Limit (WLL) applies to industrial applications only.

Breaking Load (BL) indicates the load at which the component reaches failure and should not be treated as the normal operating load. Wichard states a safety factor of 5 between Breaking Load and industrial WLL.

For use aboard a yacht or sailing boat, selection should therefore consider the nautical Working Load, dimensions and requirements of the complete installation.
